Shopping on the Island

We spent the afternoon shopping on Shamian Island, where the famous White Swan hotel is located.  This hotel which is currently under construction was the famous hotel where thousands of adoptive families stayed throughout the years.  This is also where 8 consulates are located including the US Consulate.

Some history on the Island:

"The island's history dates back to the Opium War when the territory was divided into two concessions given to France and the United Kingdom by the Qing government in the 19th century. The island is a gazetted historical area that serves as a tranquil reminder of the colonial European period, with quiet pedestrian avenues flanked by trees and lined by historical buildings in various states of upkeep. The island is the location of several hotels, a youth hostel, restaurants and tourist shops selling curios and souvenirs."

We enjoyed shopping for gifts for our loved ones back home, as well as special gifts that we will one day give to Lottie. Our favorite store, called A gift from China, gives all the proceeds to help orphaned children in China.  It was a beautiful store and we were happy to spend some money knowing who it benefited.   We bought her Chinese style silk dresses in every color and size, the famous "squeaky" Chinese shoes, and some Chinese Shaanxi dolls.

We took the famous photo of Lottie with the child statues, although she was not too pleased to be placed in the middle, we got the shot.  By the end of our 2 hour shopping excursion Lottie was done and we were back in the van heading to our hotel.  While she napped Lola and I went through all of our Chinese treasures.

  1. Looks like a great day and such a historic place! I LOVE the picture of her in the line with the kids. I didn't realize she was crying until I read it! Keep enjoying your last few days there :)

  2. Too funny the photo with the statues. Did you shop for pearls? I am curious about the prices and whether they are really any less expensive the hear in the states.
